The Painter 4 Wow! Book

Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Fractal Painter 4

Reviewed by Charlie Morris
January 30, 1997

Art programs come in two flavors: vector-based ("draw" programs) and bitmap ("paint" programs). Vector packages like Corel Draw or Illustrater build images from elements such as lines, shapes and text. Bitmap-oriented packages draw an image pixel-by-pixel. The advantage of vector-based images is that they are easy to resize and modify, while the advantage of bitmap images lies in the many artistic effects that they can create. Using a bitmap-based "paint" program allows you to simulate the effects of different "brushes", and to create subtle gradations of color that would choke a vector-based program.

The most popular paint package is Painter, from Fractal Design. This industry-standard powerhouse gives artists unprecedented creative possibilities. The Painter 4 Wow! Book is a comprehensive guide to Painter. It is suitable for beginners or advanced users, and it contains a wealth of great examples. The author takes you through each process step-by-step, and throws in lots of tips n tricks!

Chapters include:
  • Getting to know Painter
  • The Power of Color
  • Painting with Brushes
  • Selections, Shape Paths and Masks
  • Using Floaters and Shapes
  • Enhancing Photos
  • Exploring Special Effects
  • Multimedia with Painter
  • Printing and Archival Concerns
  • Making Mosaics and Web Graphics

There is also an excellent appendix which includes the addresses of all the vendors mentioned in the book, some fine art service bureaus, and all the artists who contributed to the book. There is also a list of reference books for further reading.

As a book of this kind should, the Painter 4 Wow! Book includes lots of beautiful color graphics to illustrate the various techniques discussed. The quality and variety of these pics is remarkable.

The book comes with a CD-ROM which includes:
  • Custom brush and paper libraries for Painter
  • 100 Stock photos, textures and video clips
  • Software demos of Painter, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premier and others.

This is a well-written, comprehensive book about an excellent program, and I highly recommend it.
