Q. Finally, can I have it delivered cheap, soon and perfect?
A. Arrange these words into a well known saying or phrase...
The short answer is No. You could arguably apply this to any product or service and I think it is very worthwhile considering how the cost, delivery schedule and product quality trade off against one another.
For sure you can have any one of the three taken to extremes to the detriment of the other two. That is you can 100% perfect quality but it will take a long time and cost a lot of money. Or you can have the job soon and it still cost quite a bit and the quality is likely to be poor to adequate. Or you can have the job done as cheaply as possible and the quality depends then on the time it is allowed to take. In this case, taking longer may not guarantee quality, it might just take longer because the rate for the job is low and therefore it is also a low priority task. Or the cost may be low because the junior staff are put on the job.
But still, the client wants to pay next to nothing, have it tomorrow, or late today if possible and for it to be so well engineered that it never needs any support afterwards. In fact they’d just love us to do it for nothing at all.
